Women + Waves is redefining women’s surf travel, creating empowering spaces for women to connect, progress, and find confidence in and out of the water. Founded in the UK by surfers and entrepreneurs Rachel Murphy and Rob Barber, the company began as a simple idea – to bring women together through the shared joy of surfing. What started as informal “come and try” sessions on Wednesday nights in Newquay soon grew into structured coaching weekends and, eventually, international surf retreats.

Today, Women + Waves has become a global surf community for women, offering lessons, camps, and adventures in stunning destinations around the world. Rachel and the coaching team continue to expand its reach, while staying true to its mission: to create a supportive, confidence-building environment where women of all ages and abilities can learn, grow, and thrive in the ocean.

Among the many surf destinations they visit, Barbados holds a special place. The team was first drawn to the island for its warm tropical waters, consistent surf, and friendly atmosphere – an ideal combination for building confidence and connection. “Barbados ticks all the boxes,” says Rachel. “It’s safe, fun, has great waves for all levels, and offers that perfect tropical vibe our guests love.”

Leading the retreats on the island are trip leaders Jodie and myself, Chelsea, who bring our local knowledge, coaching expertise, and passion for surf culture to every experience. Under our guidance, guests discover Barbados through both its waves and its community, gaining an authentic understanding of island life and surf culture that goes far beyond a typical holiday. Each winter, Women + Waves returns to Barbados to host multiple retreats, welcoming women from Europe and North America who are looking for sunshine, surf, and a space to reset and recharge.
The benefits of the Barbados experience are as emotive as they are physical. The island’s warm ocean, welcoming surf scene, and laid-back pace create the perfect environment for well-being and self-discovery. “Barbados has such a positive impact on our guests,” says Rob. “They arrive tired from their jobs back home, and within days you can see the transformation – relaxed, confident, and glowing from spending time in nature and in the sea.” Many participants leave with new friendships and a deeper connection to themselves, the ocean, and the global surf sisterhood that Women + Waves has built.
Barbados’ surf scene plays a huge part in that transformation. Gentle, consistent breaks like Freights Bay and Drill Hall offer ideal conditions for beginners and intermediates, allowing women to progress at their own pace in a fun, low-pressure setting. Beyond surfing, the retreats include yoga, surf-skate sessions, and group discussions focused on mindset, wellness, and confidence. Cultural immersion is another highlight – guests explore local markets, enjoy authentic Bajan cuisine, and join Jodie and I for island tours that reveal Barbados’ vibrant character and sense of community.

Sustainability is also central to the Women + Waves ethos. The company partners with organisations that offset the carbon footprint of international travel through tree planting and reef restoration projects, and encourages guests to take part in local beach cleanups. Every retreat is designed to have a positive impact on both participants and the destinations they visit.
And of course, the island’s natural beauty never fails to inspire. Watching racehorses being bathed in the sea at sunrise, diving into clear blue water, or dining at a seaside restaurant – these are moments that stay with guests long after they leave.
As Women + Waves continues to grow, Barbados remains one of its most cherished destinations. “It’s become a home away from home for our team and our guests,” says Rob. “Barbados has allowed us to run multiple retreats in one incredible location, and we’re excited to keep building on that foundation – sharing the magic of
this island with women from around the world.”
